First Trimester Surgical Abortion

A manual aspirator can be used for early abortions, or the vacuum aspiration method may be used for both first and second trimester abortions. The procedure itself is brief, but allow two to four hours for intake laboratory testing, counseling, and recovery time.

Second Trimester Abortion

An ultrasound exam and dilatation of the cervix take place approximately two to four hours prior to the procedure. Although the procedure itself lasts about seven to ten minutes, be prepared to be in the clinic approximately four to eight hours. The fee for second trimester abortion services varies depending on the length of the pregnancy.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is now available at Planned Parenthood / Women's Health Services. A medical abortion is a way to end pregnancy without surgery and can be administered up to 63 days after the last period begins.

There are three steps to this procedure: (1) Your clinician will give you either a dose of mifepristone in tablet form or an injection of methotrexate. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down, ends pregnancy in the uterus, and causes vaginal bleeding. Methotrexate stops pregnancy in the uterus. It also stops those that develop in a fallopian tube — ectopic pregnancies. (2) You will take another medication called misoprostol in tablet form. This causes the uterus to contract and empty with vaginal bleeding. (3) You will return to your clinician for a follow up visit.

Fee Schedule* Dates are measured from the beginning of the last menstrual period (LMP).

At the time of your admission, you will be asked to provide a urine specimen so that we may confirm your positive pregnancy test. A medical assistant will draw a small amount of blood from your finger as well as your arm. Your blood samples will be tested for anemia, your blood type, and for the presence of the Rh factor, which may require a special injection, Rhogam. The fee for Rhogam ranges from $40.00 to $95.00 depending on the length of the pregnancy.

If you choose to be sedated to make yourself more comfortable during your abortion, medications will be given to you through your IV. A monitor will be in place to watch your vital signs. Although the medications will not cause you to fall asleep, you may not remember the abortion as well. The additional fee for sedation is $40.00 and an adult must accompany you to the medical center and stay until you are discharged.
